When we refer to holistic or alternative medicine, or a holistic or alternative approach to health and living, we are referring to the belief that the cause of a problem must be sought and dealt with, instead of simply treating the symptoms.

But in saying this, it is also not the entire scope of the term "holistic" or "alternative" - as these terms also refer to "man" (used in the genderless way) being treated as a whole and that the entire person - physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual, (body, mind and spirit) should be in harmony with one another.
A holistic or alternative approach will also look at the entire spectrum of the person's being - be that diet, exercise, mental state of mind and attitude, being in touch with himself, his surroundings and his Higher self.
This is therefore an inter-disciplinary field, with a more nature orientated slant, which would include:
As soon as the word "holistic" or "alternative" medicine is used, some traditional Western (also referred to as allopathic medicine) medical practitioners, do seem to have their heckles raised, but on reflection by both sides of the "health and medicine" coin, both parties would agree that there is place for both these schools of thought.
The writer is also of the opinion that the word "alternative medicine" should be less used, and should rather be replaced by "complementary health" since it would cause far less confusion in the minds of people.
But to sum up, holistic or alternative medicine and health looks at the treatment of the "whole" person, using more natural remedies and therapies, which are in tune with the person's natural state and body, to achieve a point of wellness of body and mind.
