Since the dawn of times, mankind has made use of essential oil, extracted in various ways from flowers, seeds, bark, resins and other parts of plants and flowers for a variety of reasons.

Essential oil is used in more than just in aromatherapy, but also in a range of everyday articles such as toothpaste, gum, food flavorings, cosmetics and other household products.
Plant and flower material (fresh or dried) is subjected to various extraction methods, depending on the material used, to obtain the oils lodged within the plant material.
When we talk of an essential oil, it really is a bit of a misnomer, since it varies totally from normal oil that we use daily - it is for instance volatile and evaporate rapidly when exposed to air. You will find that when you place a drop essential oil on paper that it will after evaporation leave no oily (or very little) residue on the paper.
Carrier oils on the other hand are more like the oils we normally know, and are classed as fixed oils.
It is a long and expensive process to extract the pure oils from plant and flower material, and a great deal of botanical material is required to make a small amount of essential oil - it takes for instance 10,000 pounds of rose petals to make 1 pound of rose oil.
For this reason, some oils - like rose, jasmine, myrrh, frankincense etc. is expensive when buying the real thing.
It is unfortunate that there are some companies that profess to sell pure essential oils, yet the oils that they sell are not pure and is adulterated (mixed) with other vegetable oils, to cut the cost and to increase their profits.
It has also happened that people would market synthetic oils as pure essential oils, and although the smell may be close to the real thing, it will contain no therapeutic properties, since it is a synthetic copy.
Pure essential oils contain hundreds of different chemical components and are highly concentrated forms of the oils found in botanical material.
The oils are extracted from either fresh or dried botanical material, and include various parts used to obtain the oil - from leaves, flowers, stalks, bark, roots, rhizomes etc - all depending on which oil is made.
Buying essential oil
When buying an essential oil, ensure that you buy oils that are pure and of high quality:
you buy it from a company that knows their product and that has been in business for some time - (we have been around since 2001),
it is sold in amber or blue bottles, since clear glass will not help prevent oxidation of the oil,
that the bottles are fitted with dropper inserts,
that the oils are individually priced, since different oils cost different prices to manufacture.
